SBMM catches Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War?

12 October 2020

Last week ‘SBMM’ – also known as skill-based matchmaking – has exploded the Twitter. This is due to the release of the new beta version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Many players have noticed fraud and a lot of suicide, so the resentment of users is growing.

There are a number of reasons why players don’t like SBMM. Many argue that this punishes highly skilled players. If a player has a higher level, he enters the lobby with other talented players, preventing them from demonstrating their skills and not dominating the weaker players. Therefore, many began to draw the attention of developers to this problem actively.

Treyarch has not yet responded to these statements. Earlier, the developers have already said that SBMM has nothing to do with Call of Duty, claiming that:

SBMM is one of many many tunable parameters in a matchmaking system. It’s funny watching people talk about it like it’s a big switch that can only be turned on or off.

This is ultimately the stumbling block. Highly skilled players want to be able to dominate the less skilled, at least occasionally, while game studios try to protect the worst players to encourage them to keep playing. Despite the controversy, more and more games seem to be heading towards SBMM as a major part of matchmaking.
